A Case of Knowledge and Disclosure
For the past year we have noticed more reproductions of
antique-cut diamonds on the market. Unfortunately in many
instances they are being sold as "genuine old-mine" and
European-cut diamonds without disclosure. The proliferation of
these goods is fueling the production of antique reproduction
jewelry which - again in many cases - is not being disclosed as
such.
The reproduction diamonds originate from India and other cutting
centers. Usually they are sold in mixed parcels. They include
crudely fashioned cushion-cuts and ovals weighing between 0.01
carat to 0.75 carat. The diamonds are cut for maximum weight
retention, not beauty and attractive symmetry.
One of the key factors in distinguishing the reproduction
antique-cut diamonds from the original lies in the girdle. The
reproduction diamonds possess a thick, faceted girdle, whereas
the original usually has a thin, often knife-edged frosted
girdle.
Although many of these diamonds and jewelry reproductions are
perfectly acceptable substitutes for the original antique
articles, jewelers should be aware these reproductions exist and
should ask suppliers if they are reproductions. Learn to
recognize the difference and to inform your clients.
The Goldstein Diamond Price Guide and Market Report is now
available by request. It contains current asking prices for
European, old-mine cut, briolette and rose-cut diamonds ranging
from 0.01ct.to 3.00cts. The price guide also contains information
to assist jewelers, designers, appraisers, auctioneers,
pawnbrokers, the insurance industry in the purchase, replacement
and appraising of older cut diamonds.
