The 1794, AU58 Micro Porous Planchet SEGS dollar, $115,000.
MILWAUKEE, WIS. - Two 1794 dollars were stars of Heritage
Numismatic Auctions' May 5-8 Signature Auction at the Midwest
Airlines Convention Center, garnering a total of more than
$200,000.
Like many survivors of the first year mintage of 1,758 pieces,
the two 1794 dollars were not problem-free. However, sharp
examples such as these are coveted by collectors for their rarity
and historical importance. One 1794 dollar realized $115,000. The
other realized $86,250.
It was the 12th major auction Heritage has conducted as official
auctioneer of the Central States Numismatic Society. Prices
realized exceeded $12.3 million, which does not include the $3.4
million generated in the Heritage-CAA Central States Currency
Auction.
Total sales were expected to climb well past $16 million as
bidders competed for post-auction bargains and in Heritage's
Central States Bullet Auction, which closed May 10 at Heritage's
website.
