: On January 22, despite the onset of a blizzard, floor, phone, and
Internet bidders battled throughout the morning to purchase
sports material at Philip Weiss Auctions' Sports Memorabilia
sale.
The auction, grossing more than $300,000, was highlighted by a
collection of basketball sweaters from the estate of Frank
Meehan, center for the New York Celtics basketball team during
the late 1920s.
Meehan's championship sweater with his original contract sold for
$16,500. Another of Meehan's jerseys with a pair of socks fetched
$9,625, and without socks brought $4,950. From the same
collection a New Jersey Crescents basketball sweater sold for
$4,675 and a New York Giants baseball sweater went for $4,675.
Ping putter, $16,500.
Golf items did exceptionally well. A rare Ping putter sold at
$16,500 and an incredibly scarce Inwood Golf Tournament program
featuring Bobby Jones' first tournament win went for $5,250.
A huge 1955 Dodgers photo from the Ebbets Field offices sold at
$4,950. A rare Babe Ruth typed letter with negative racial
overtones brought $8,250, and a grade 7 Williams playball sold
for $3,575.
All prices include a 13 percent buyer's premium.
