for $268,000.
NEW YORK CITY - Christie's New York announced that its
October 14 auction of fine musical instruments resulted in a world
record for a price for a guitar with no celebrity association. The
Gibson incorporated, a solid-body electric guitar, Les Paul model,
Kalamazoo, Mich., 1959, was estimated to sell for $100/150,000 but
the final hammer price (including the buyer's premium) was
$268,000.
The auction featured 158 lots, sold 116 lots for a total sales of
over $1,300,000. Other top lots included an Andrea Guarneri,
violin, made near Cremona, circa 1687, brought $204,000 and a
violoncello by Gioffredo Cappa, Saluzzo, circa 1690, made
$156,000.
Another guitar, a Gibson incorporated hollow body electric
guitar, custom made for Hank Garland in 1959, sold for $36,000
($10/15,000) to a private US buyer. Another world auction record
was set for a silver mounted violin bow by Francois Nicolar
Voirin, Paris, circa 1880, selling for $14,400.
