Rare Tall Case Clock Reaches $20,350 in Upstate New York

VESTAL, N.Y. - A rare Gawen Brown mahogany tall case clock sold for $20,350 at the Mapes Auction Gallery March 14 auction.

Brown worked in Boston from 1755 through 1776 and is one of the most sought-after American clockmakers. The clock had an excellent brass dial with engraved Gawen Brown silver name plate. The clock, the first lot in the sale, had a number of bidders in the salesroom. The winner was a Connecticut collector.

Most of the other items came from the estate of Dr Arthur King of Athens, Penn. A very large late Georgian breakfront brought $5,500. A Louis XIV center table with broken red marble top sold at $10,560. Other highlights include an English skeleton clock by Dent, $3,300 and a Hepplewhite inlaid writing table, $2,860. Jewelry was strong, with a three-plus-carat two diamond ring selling for $5,225 and a 14 karat charm bracelet with 20 charms bringing $1,375.

A presentation boxed set of 12 enameled variously colored glass tumblers brought $1,155. They were probably by Moser in the early Twentieth Century.

Prices quoted above include a ten percent buyer's premium.
