Jersey Hits a $264,210 Home Run for Leland's
SEAFORD, N.Y. -- Babe Ruth's 1925 New York Yankees home jersey,
one of only three Ruth home jerseys known to exist, sold for
$264,210 during Leland's Sports Auction this past Saturday, May
30.
The jersey helped swell the two-day total for the auction to $4.7
million, making it the largest in the company's 15-year history.
Cataloged as the earliest known Babe Ruth jersey, it was "worn
circa 1925 by the man behind the myth, whose name is synonymous
with the Yankees." The jersey was accompanied by an undated
photograph showing Ruth wearing it, taken in the Yankees dugout
with Earle Combs and Bob Meusal. The lot received 17 bids before
selling to an undisclosed buyer.
Other top lots included a set of 1911 M116 Sporting Life trading
cards, 315 in all that sold at $175,831. A game used Ty Cobb bat,
circa 1924-28 went for $70,332, Lou Gehrig's 1936 Sporting News
MVP pocket watch brought $59,551, and Junior Gilliam's 1955
Brooklyn Dodgers world championship ring realized $42,551.
