Withington's Doll Auction Season Comes to a Comfortable Close

NASHUA, N.H. - Richard Withington closed the 2000 doll auction season with some of the highest prices realized this year. Enthusiastic bidders in the "full house" crowd came from all over the United States, (including Hawaii) and Europe. Prices were extremely strong in the area of French and German dolls, automas, chinas and collectible dolls of the '40s and '50s.

Withington celebrated his 2,350th auction on Friday, October 27. He has auctioned dolls for more than 30 years and antiques for more than 50 years.

Among the prices realized, a JDK Hilda sold for $3,190; a Queen Anne reached $3,850; an early crèche man rang up $2,970; an early crèche woman garnered $2,310; a long face Jumeau (hairline) brought $6,270; and French fashion, with kid over wood body, fetched $4,180.

A kissing Bru sold for $2,970; Dorothy Heizer, NIADA, realized $2,310; a Belton brought $2,145; a Steiff tea cozy warmed to $632; a swivel-neck Parian turned heads for $1,300; a poured wax was hot at $1,320; a mechanical elephant trumpeted to $1,540; a German stable reached $467; a lot of doll accessories garnered $660; a lot of antique doll hats sold for $660; and a doll parasol brought $363.

Prices quoted include a ten percent buyers premium.
