Sports Memorabilia Tops $4.6 Million in Illinois

OAK BROOK, ILL. - MastroNet's November auction demonstrated that demand for quality sports memorabilia remains strong. The two-day auction, featuring 833 lots, generated just over $4.6 million and included a number of record prices.

A 1951 Bowman #305 William Mays baseball card set a record price at $109,639. It is only one of two such Bowman's that has received this level of grading, PSA mint c.

E300 1912 Plow's candy collection of 55 cards sold for $90,199, and a T206 Honus Wagner with Piedmont back and related letter sold for $86,730. There are only 50 to 60 T206 Wagners known to exist and only two of these have been verified as having a Piedmont back - one the $1.265 million card sold by MastroNet in 2000.

A 1951 Bowman baseball Kansas City Find complete set of baseball cards brought $85,904. This 324-card set comes from a pack fresh find and includes rookie cards for Mantle and Mays.

A Ty Cobb 1911-1916 Hillerich & Son game used bat, the earliest Ty Cobb signature model bat known to exist, sold for a record price of $77,142.

A 1886-1890 N172 Old Judge Collection of 377 Nineteenth Century baseball cards brought $70,671.

Another complete set of 1953 Bowman baseball cards from the famous Kansas City Find sold for $67,305, the finest 1887 N28 Allen & Ginter World Champions set went for $61,047; a 1915 M101-5 Sporting News #151 Babe Ruth card graded PSA NM-MT 8 commanded $60,439; a Mel Ott 1934-1937 H&B 125 game used bat went for $52,854; and a T202 Christy Mathewson giant triple folder advertising poster, $50,511.

A 1967 Topps test stand-ups complete proof set of 24 sold for $45,667; a 1952 Topps baseball card complete set reached $43,679; a 1933 Goudey #106 Napoleon Lajoie realized $40,679; a circa 1910 Peach Baseball Gloves advertising display sold for $35,187; a 1927 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig tour broadside poster brought $32,816; and a "Mickey Mantle Triptych," an original oil painting by LeRoy Neiman, garnered $31,625.
