White Plains Antiques Show Offers Wide Mix Of Antiques

:The fine cellaret was almost obscured. One could walk down the aisle and pass it by without seeing it, but what a shame that would have been. Deceptively unassuming but with clean and crisp form, the 1880 mahogany cellaret was offered by Hamptons Antique Galleries, Stamford, Conn., and upon close examination, revealed a lead liner and wonderful sarcophagus-style handles.

David Beauchamp's booth was across the aisle from Hamptons at the White Plains Antiques Show, January 10 and 11, at White Plains High School, but the Brookline, N.H., dealer could not help raving about the cellaret, going so far as to pull it into the aisle and open it, all the while extolling its virtues to a show visitor.

Ironically, Beauchamp offered in his booth an English Sheraton sideboard/wine table under which the cellaret would have looked lovely. It was circa 1830–1840s, with two drawers, an inlaid backsplash and featured solid and crotch veneered mahogany.

Other standouts in Hampton's booth included a Georgian mahogany and satinwood inlaid linen press with molded cornice over figured panel doors with scroll borders, and the circa 1885 painting "A Quiet Day By the River" by the English painter J. Harrop, known for his landscapes and pastoral country scenes.

The high school offered a comfortable antiquing experience with dealers set up in cafeterias and smaller rooms instead of the typical large gymnasium, and there was a wide range of merchandise to peruse.

Southbury Fine Arts, Southbury, Conn., showed an exceptional and rare Italian Art Nouveau bronze, circa 1900, by Ferrari with a Murano art glass shade. The two female figures depicted are shown frolicking over a water scene complete with a playful dolphin and was inscribed "I due poli (The two poles)." The dealer specializes in clocks, so the booth featured some choice examples, including a French regulator by Tiffany and an English bracket clock, circa 1860, with Westminster chimes.

Nicholas diBenedetto, East Quogue, N.Y., filled his booth with a nice grouping of paintings, a few choice pieces of furniture and a collection of doorstops on a tiered display. Highlights include a Nineteenth Century American one-drawer two-door cabinet with a marble top, circa 1860.

Elsewhere at the show, bamboo was the new black as several dealers exhibited a choice piece of bamboo furniture from a bamboo table at Cottage Treasures, Long Valley, N.J., to a Nineteenth Century Victorian "root end" bamboo corner chair at Marilyn Saland Antiques, Scarsdale, N.Y., and even an American faux bamboo bed at Laura Schoene and Robert Trites, Red Rock, N.Y., along with a root bamboo saddle stool, circa 1900.

An industrial fan cover was a standout in the booth of Ann Marsh, Danbury, Conn.

Cottage Treasures also showed an industrial dining table and a 1940s tiger maple highboy and a pair of 1940s wingback chairs in ticking with down-filled cushions.

Other offerings at Marilyn Saland Antiques included a Swedish Gustavian-style one-drawer stand, circa 1890; a walnut chest of three drawers with carved drawer pulls, circa 1860–1870; and a Chinese red lacquered comb box with carved deer, circa 1890–1910, displayed on top of a circa 1900 Chinese elm bench.

French furniture was prominently offered at Arti Antiques, Brookfield, Conn., which specializes in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century European furniture. The dealers showed a Nineteenth Century French Louis XV-style inlaid chest with a marble top, a Nineteenth Century French rosewood Louis XV-style desk and a mid-Nineteenth Century French bronze clock.

Produced by Martin Greenstein's The Last Detail Antiques Show, the event returns next January. Greenstein's next show is the Bedford Hills Antiques Show, February 21 and 22.
