Dealer Claims $25,300 Political Banner in New Hampshire

WEST SWANZEY, N.H.
: - A rare silk political banner promoting David Godell for Governor of New Hampshire in 1881 led the way at Knotty Pine's Americana auction this past weekend.

The two-day sale, October 25-26, featured more than 800 lots with bottles and stoneware sold on Saturday and Americana offered on Sunday.

The large silk banner, measuring roughly 51 by 32 inches, featured likenesses of Godell as well as President Harrison and Vice President Morton and was emblazoned with "Concord, N.H." across the bottom.

The piece had been consigned from a local home having descended in the family of the former politician. Bidding on the lot was brisk, with several in the gallery competing with four phone bidders, although in the end a New Hampshire dealer in the room claimed the lot at $25,300.

A complete review will appear in a future issue.
