Bidding for Willard Clock Reaches a Record $253,000 at Landry's

ESSEX, MASS. -- A splendid tall clock signed by Aaron Willard with a beautifully painted dial signed on the back by John Minot and numbered 214 sold at L.A. Landry's auction on December 4 for a record $253,000.

Bidding opened on the Lane family clock at $35,000 and bounced rapidly between Todd Prickett in the room and two telephone bidders before selling to one of the phone participants.

The clock, which was unreserved, had light and dark wood inlaid quarter-fan inlays revealed by cutaways on the molded door.

The same buyer bought a pair of Boston miniature watercolor portraits of Mr and Mrs Joseph W. Jenkins by Thomas Edwards, dated 1825 and 1830, for $8,050. They also came from the Lane family.

A complete review of the sale will appear in a future issue.
