: Christie's recent sale of maritime art offered 256 lots, of which
146 sold for a total of $1,938,961, including buyer's premium.
The top lot was a Montague Dawson (1895-1973) painting entitled
"Night Anchorage at Whampoa," which beat its high estimate of
$200,000 to sell for $309,900, creating a new world record for
the artist. A private collector bought the piece.
The British artist also painted "Seventeenth Century English
Privateers at their Caribbean Anchorage." Estimated at
$90/120,000, the painting brought $141,900 from the European
trade.
Falling within estimate was Dawson's "The Lightning on the High
Seas" sold at $125,100 ($120/180,000). This piece also went to
the European trade.
