NEW YORK CITY
: Christie's recent sale of maritime art offered 256 lots, of which 146 sold for a total of $1,938,961, including buyer's premium.

The top lot was a Montague Dawson (1895-1973) painting entitled "Night Anchorage at Whampoa," which beat its high estimate of $200,000 to sell for $309,900, creating a new world record for the artist. A private collector bought the piece.

The British artist also painted "Seventeenth Century English Privateers at their Caribbean Anchorage." Estimated at $90/120,000, the painting brought $141,900 from the European trade.

Falling within estimate was Dawson's "The Lightning on the High Seas" sold at $125,100 ($120/180,000). This piece also went to the European trade.
