Perry Painting Sets Record at Dawson and Nye

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J.
: A record price paid at auction for a painting by Enoch Wood Perry was established this past Saturday, April 24, at Dawson and Nye.

The well-executed painting, entitled "The Pemigewasset Coach," was dated "99" and measured 34 by 54 inches. It attracted the attention of numerous dealers and collectors from throughout the country with eight phones lined up to compete for the lot by sale time.

The painting opened to the floor at $30,000 with one bidder in the room battling with a phone bidder up to $80,000. From that point on, all of the action came from the phones, with the original phone bidder finally dropping out at $140,000, only to reenter the bidding and secure the oil at $224,000, including premium.

Other top lots included a Tiffany Studios leaded glass "Crocus" lamp on a bronze base at $29,500, a New York Chippendale chest of drawer $32,745, a double back settee $14,160 and an August Edouart silhouette realized $7,080.

A complete review will appear in a future issue.
