: A three-session auction conducted over the course of two days at
Pook & Pook posted hefty prices, including a believed record,
for a wide selection of artwork and furnishings.
Leading the October 8-9 sale was a Severin Roesen oil on canvas
still life depicting a large basket of fruit and champagne flute
on a marble slab. Estimated at $70/90,000, the piece left the
auction block after active bidding at $115,000.
Furniture from the session included a Delaware Valley tiger maple
highboy selling at $59,800 and a painted Hilltown, Penn., tall
case clock that tripled estimates at $57,500.
The auction got off to a brisk start with a special session of
139 lots of frakturs and related works on paper from the
collection of Dr and Mrs Donald Shelley. The collection was well
received, with the top lot coming as a Sussel-Washington fraktur
drawing depicting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, which sold
for $97,750. A Samuel or Martin Gottschall Mennonite hand-drawn
watercolor and ink illuminated drawing depicting angels and a
bird realized $86,250.
A complete review will appear in a future issue.
