: "It was a bang-up auction," stated Gene Shannon in regard to his
Thursday', April 28, sale of fine art.
"There was enthusiastic bidding across the boards," according to
the auctioneer, resulting in more than 15 record prices paid at
auction and a high sales total of over $3.8 million.
The lot garnering the most attention was a Childe Hassam oil on
canvas measuring 481/4 by 601/4 inches that was titled "Nudes at
the Cove." The painting, executed in the summer of 1902 when
Hassam traveled to Portland Ore., sold to a private couple in the
room and was underbid by a private buyer from Florida on the
telephone. The lot sold for $320,000.
A monumental Hayley Lever harbor scene sold to a buyer in the
room for $140,000 and a Fitz Hugh Lane oil realized $125,000.
A complete review will appear in a future issue.
