Tiffany Lamp Tops Skinner's Twentieth Century Auction

A rare Tiffany Studios hydrangea cone-shaped shade that brought $127,000 was the star of Skinner's Twentieth Century Furniture and Decorative Arts sale in Boston on June 25. The piece, estimated at $25/35,000, was purchased in Boston in the 1940s as a hanging shade. Sometime thereafter it was married to a circa 1940 Asian-style base.

When the consignors met with James Callahan, director of Skinner's Asian department, he realized that the shade was of far greater interest in the marketplace than the Oriental lamp itself and, accordingly, it was placed in the recent Twentieth Century sale.
