:Thirty pieces of work from the personal collection of Arts and
Crafts designer, metalsmith and artist Marie Zimmerman were
offered at Rago's Craftsman Auction this past weekend, September
17 and 18. Hosted by David Rago, Jerry Cohen and Suzanne
Perrault, the auction offered a huge assortment of materials.
Highlighting the sale was a 10-inch-high carved wooden box by
Zimmerman on round ivory ball feet with cast bronze handles and
hinges with hasp fashioned in Egyptian motifs. The hand carved
wood surface was painted in green, blue, red and yellow with
black outlining and natural brown wood edges and also decorated
with studded cabochon jewels of amethyst and semiprecious quartz.
The interior of the box was lined in purple silk with small
medallion designs in Eastern taste.
Pictured in the February 1922 issue of House and Garden, a
copy of which was included with the sale of the item, the lot
soared past the $30/50,000 presale estimates as it realized
$117,500.
A complete review will appear in a future issue.
