:A rare Byrdcliffe chiffonier, circa 1904, with painted panels by
Hermann Dudley Murphy established a record price at auction for
the Byrdcliffe form when it sold for $207,000, on Thursday,
October 27, during an auction conducted by James Bakker and
Robert Edwards.
The piece, sold during a 29-lot auction of Byrdcliffe material,
much of it exhibited in the 2004-2005 exhibition "Byrdcliffe: An
American Arts and Crafts Colony," had been consigned by a
descendant of Byrdcliffe founder Ralph Whitehead. The chiffonier
retained remnants of the original transparent green stain, the
original bronze hardware and was branded with the Byrdcliffe
logo.
A complete review of the auction will appear in a future
issue.
