A Tiger By The Tail At Northeast Auction

MANCHESTER, N.H.
: Property from the estate of New Hampshire collector George Baker D'Arcy set the pace for Northeast Auction's November 5 sale at the Center of New Hampshire. Leading the 150-selection of American furniture, glass, silver and paintings was D'Arcy's favorite piece, a 32-inch-long painted wooden tiger by Portland, Maine, carver Gus Wilson (1864-1950). The feline fetched $160,000 including premium, selling to an absentee bidder against an estimate of $35/50,000.

From the same consignment, a Rochester, N.H., tall case clock by James Charles Cole, its inlaid case possibly by Charles Dennett, went to Milly McGee for $127,000 ($50/70,000). Massachusetts clock specialist John Delaney underbid the Maryland dealer on the timepiece that is illustrated in Brock Jobe's Portsmouth Furniture.

Northeast continued on November 6 with English and Continental furniture, silver and ceramics, and Chinese Export porcelain. Full details of the sale will appear in a future issue.
