Jesse James Letter Tops R&R's Sale

AMHERST, N.H.
: R&R has reported that its December auction was the firm's most successful sale ever, with the last known letter from Jesse James selling for $105,300. A Superman #1 comic brought $39,379.

The top ten lots were rounded out by a signed Christy Mathewson check, $18,625; Albert Einstein's time capsule message from the 1939 World's Fair; $15,766; two original Charles Schulz Peanuts strips, $14,586; an original Disney Sleepy Beauty cel, $14,333; Hemingway's signed quotation from John Donne's "Meditation XVII: For Whom The Bell Tolls," $13,288; a check from Babe Ruth to his wife, signed twice by the Babe, $11,562; and a Marilyn Monroe signed photo, $9,787.

All prices reported include buyer's premium.
