Queen Anne Side Chairs Fetch $69,000 At Carlsen

:On January 14, Carlsen Gallery, Inc conducted an auction of antique furniture, accessories and fine art including property from a number of private sources including an Albany, N.Y., estate.

With competitive bidding from a crowded room it also had available telephone and absentee bidding. "I am very pleased with the prices that were achieved at the auction, I am happy to say that we are seeing a consistent trend of strong prices for high quality merchandise," said Russell Carlsen, president of Carlsen Gallery, Inc.

A highlight in the auction was a pair of rare Queen Anne side chairs, which brought $69,000 from a prominent New York City dealer/collector over the phone. Leigh Keno said after purchasing the chairs that they are the most graceful Boston side chairs that he has ever seen. Out of the same estate came an Eighteenth Century Queen Anne corner chair that garnered $8,625

Furniture continued to do well including an important piece of English furniture, a triple pedestal based dining table, that achieved $28,750, a circa 1790–1810 Southern mahogany sideboard with bellflower, line and rosette inlays for $12,075, and an Arts and Crafts chair by Charles Rohlfs for $7,763.

A marble bust by prominent American sculptor Chauncey Ives went to a private collector for $26,450. A 17-inch-tall plaster bust of "Imogen" by Erastus Dow Palmer, an Albany sculptor, sold to the same collector for $11,500.

Art highlights included a pair of oil paintings on canvas of sailboats in full sail by Warren Sheppard that realized $31,050. A painting of livestock in a barnyard by James McDougal Hart sold for $12,650. Another painting found in a barn in Columbia County by Antonio Jacobsen fetched $10,350.

Another item of note was Volumn II of a three-volume set, History of The Indian Tribes of North America, which sold for $18,400.

Decorative accessories included a Venetian glass eight-light gold chandelier at $3,910, a Kirk & Sons sterling pitcher with two goblets for $4,600 and two large steel engravings of Roman columns at $9,775.

Pottery offerings included a four-gallon stoneware Ithaca crock with bird decoration that fetched $3,450 and a cobalt decorated stoneware flask for $3,450.

All prices reported include a 15 percent buyer's premium.
