Rare and important, this pair of neoclassical rosewood games tables, attributed to the workshop of Joseph Meeks and Sons, New York, second quarter Nineteenth Century, brought $11,400.
:St Charles Gallery kicked off its 2008 season with a well attended and highly competitive sale February 16 and 17. The two-day auction included more than 1,300 lots of fine English, French, American and Oriental antiques and decorative objects and jewelry. Highlights include the winning bid of $6,300 for an early Nineteenth Century Hepplewhite cylinder roll desk, and $4,320 took home a very clean George III mahogany linen press.
A good pair of French white painted Gris-de-Trianon detailed fauteuils a la Reine brought $2,880; an impressive 18K white gold and diamond solitaire engagement ring featuring a 4.09-carat diamond sold for $16,800.
An oil on canvas by Peter Max brought $4,560, and a charming Southern oil painting of a young girl received heavy bidding and landed at $6,900.
An early American lathe-turned cherrywood and brass footed four-post bed, second quarter Nineteenth Century, sold for $10,200.
Furniture attracted some intense interest. Some highlights include a period American late classical Philadelphia sideboard that realized $4,800; a handsome rosewood marble top center table attributed to Alexander Roux of New York that brought $3,360; an extremely rare and important pair of rosewood games tables attributed to the workshops of Joseph Meeks and Sons brought $11,400 from a private collector; and a wonderful Southern cherrywood four-post bed caught considerable attention and sold for a final bid of $10,200.
