:Like a scene from the movies, and it may very well have once appeared there, a rare Herter Brothers American Renaissance carved, inlaid and ebonized bed, originally commissioned for Milton Slocum Latham's Thurlow Lodge and then sold by Bonhams in the 1940s to Warner Brothers Studios, crossed the auction block for a second time at Bonhams this past week.
Sold during the firm's inaugural American furniture and decorative arts auction on January 22, the bed highlighted the first of the string of major auctions to take place during Americana Week. Consigned from the prop rooms at Warner Brothers, the bed became the top lot of the auction, going to New Orleans area collectors Max and Judy Foote for $326,000.
Sold amid 15 lots of American Renaissance furniture, other top lots from the Thurlow Lodge suite included a Herter Brothers cabinet that went to California dealer Brian Wetherell for $230,000, and a mirrored dresser that went to the Footes at $103,700.
A complete review of the auction will appear in a future issue.
