:When their famous Faberge Egg collection returned to Russia last
year, the Forbes Galleries went in search of an equally
impressive replacement for their Greenwich Village venue. The
search is over now that it has partnered with the National
Jewelry Institute (NJI) to create a unique exhibition titled
"Treasures of the Titans: 1900-1950."
"Treasures of the Titans," on view through December 31, exhibits
a variety of objects owned by some of the most powerful,
influential and popular individuals of the Twentieth Century.
Divided into four major themes, it covers the titans of arts and
society; sports and entertainment; government and royalty; and
industry and finance. According to Christopher "Kip" Forbes, vice
chairman of Forbes, as well as a member of the board of NJI, "It
was a confluence of events. Having a gallery that was
purpose-built for displaying precious objects and being on the
board of an institution which had no home, it seemed like the
ideal thing to bring them together."
The National Jewelry Institute was established to support the
preservation and education of fine jewelry. Owing to that
mission, Judith Price, president of NJI, adds new dimension to
the prospect of viewing the items on display. "When I saw a
picture of Adolph Ochs' walking stick, I thought, 'It's a walking
stick, I've got a walking stick.' But when I picked up this
package holding the stick itself I thought, 'Oh my God, what was
the man like who had that walking stick? What was in his mind
when he was first creating The New York Times? How did he
get to work every single day? What was his life like?'
