PORTLAND, ME. - This spring 70 artists were selected for the
"2003 Portland Museum of Art Biennial." This exhibition is
presented in alternate years and highlights works by both
emerging and established artists associated with the state of
Maine. Though paintings predominate the exhibition, a range of
media is represented, including site-specific work,
installations, photography and sculpture.
The "2003 Portland Museum of Art Biennial" will be on view from
April 10 through June 1.
This past summer, 877 artists submitted more than 3,500 slides to
be considered by a panel of three jurors. Lois Dodd, painter and
summer resident of Cushing, Maine, Harry Philbrick, director of
The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Conn. and
Mary Ryan, owner/director of the Mary Ryan Gallery, N.Y., spent a
weekend viewing slides and selecting the work that comprises this
year's biennial.
The Portland Museum of Art, at Seven Congress Square, is open
10 am to 5 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday;
and 10 am to 9 pm on Friday. Memorial Day through Columbus Day,
