dealers who have been specialists in Suzanne Valadon works for
many years said, "Suzanne Valadon has been one of the most
undervalued painters of her generation. She was a contemporary
and friend to the best known Impressionist painters including
Renoir, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas, who
purchased from her no less than 26 of her drawings!
"When she died in 1938 even Picasso came to her funeral. She was
the only woman invited to exhibit at the 1894 Salon de la Société
Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris. Yet for nearly a century she
has been better known as 'the mother of Utrillo' than as a
tremendous talent in her own right."
Now, Suzanne Valadon may at last get the spotlight turned her
way: Frost & Reed is hosting a special exhibition of her
paintings through November 29 at its new gallery at 21 East 67th
Street. The gallery is also involved in a planned museum tour of
Valadon's works, scheduled for 2006, and it has been contacted by
two production companies working on feature films on the
controversial French artist.
The exhibition includes "La Ferme de Mont Corin à Irigny, Rhône";
Eglise de Meyzieuet et Isère"; Les Deux Chats"; Portraite de
Gilberte" and "Nature Morte Aux Groseilles."
