: David Findlay Jr Fine Art will open "Recent Acquisitions of
American Masters and Modernists," on November 29. The show will
remain on view through December. Timed to coincide with American
auction week, this exhibition will include works by Emil
Bisttram, Childe Hassam, Frank Duveneck, William Glackens,
Winslow Homer, Ernest Lawson, Irene Rice Pereira, Charles
Sheeler, Everett Shinn, John Henry Twachtman, Steve Wheeler, Guy
Wiggins and Andrew Wyeth.
Covering a span of about 75 years, this exhibition will feature
striking examples from many of the major movements of American
art. Among the earliest works in the exhibition, "Café de la
Source," 1899, by William Glackens, is a boldly rendered
depiction of a bustling Parisian café. The work evinces Glacken's
adept handling of urban subject matter and looks forward to the
artist's depictions of New York City amusements such as city
parks and restaurants.
Other works that explore New York subject matter include
"Manhattan Snow Storm," 1925, by Wiggins; "On the Hudson
River/Palisades," circa 1898-1906, by Lawson; and "Cherry Lane
Theater," 1948, by Shinn. Hassam is represented by the beautiful
oil "Isles of the Shoals," circa 1890, a subject that occupied
the artist's attention from 1896 to 1916. Homer's mastery of the
watercolor medium is evident in the painting, "In Autumn Woods,"
circa 1877.
American Modernists Bisttram, Sheeler, Wheeler and Rice Pereira
afford an opportunity to examine the varying ways artists deal
with geometric abstraction. Finally, "The Vestry," 1972, by
Andrew Wyeth, is an arresting image of an adolescent boy,
rendered in dry brush and watercolor.
Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5:30 pm and
