Japanese Sculpture Stolen At Winter Antiques Show

Tokumitsu (active Meiji period), bronze sculpture in the form of a pair of playing shiba dogs, Nineteenth Century, bronze, shakudô and shibuichi, 4 7/8 by 8¼ by 5¾ inches, signed Tokumitsu.

According to Japanese art dealer and specialist Joan Mirviss, the theft occurred at the show during business hours even as security guards checked all bags of those exiting the building. "The charming — and ultimately too enticing — sculpture of two playful puppies weighed about 10 pounds and measured more than 8 inches in length," according to Mirviss. "So the thief was indeed clever to grab it while our attention was diverted as well as to successfully exit the building within five minutes of us noticing the loss."

Valued at more than $8,000, the bronze sculpture in the form of a pair of playing shiba dogs, with inset shakudô and shibuichi in eyes, the sculpture measures 47/8 by 8¼ by 5¾ inches and is signed Tokumitsu.
