Portrait Of Ship’s Captain Still Missing

Thought to be by Daniel Huntington, this circa 1813 family heirloom portrait, reported stolen on November 6, 2007, depicts Nineteenth Century Captain James Day along with his ship. His vessel was carrying supplies to American troops when he purposely steered it onto the rocks of Point Judith off Narragansett, R.I., to escape capture by a stronger British warship.

:The Greenfield Police Department is investigating a report by a resident in reference to a missing family portrait.

Reported stolen on November 6, 2007, the painting is a family heirloom that depicts Nineteenth Century Captain James Day along with his ship that was carrying supplies to American troops when he purposely steered it onto the rocks of Point Judith Narragansett, R.I., to escape capture by a stronger British warship. The painting is thought to have been by Daniel Huntington, circa 1813.

In the police report, the painting's owner said that the work came up missing when it was moved from his former residence in Wilton, Conn., in June 2007. It was supposed to have been kept in a storage unit until the rest of the household contents were delivered to the new home in Greenfield. The painting, along with many other items, was not delivered.
