:The Archives of American Art presents the exhibition, "Artists in
their Studios," in the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery of the
newly renovated Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and
Portraiture. The exhibition will be on view through October 27.
The archives will present interactive and informative exhibitions
from a collection of more than 16 million items documenting the
history of visual arts in America. While the Archives has a
modest gallery in New York, the new location will dramatically
increase the visibility of these unique primary sources.
"Artists in their Studios" is a selection of 75 photographs,
letters and other documents from the archives that offers a
behind-the-scenes view into the life of American artists and
their unique work spaces. The diversity of the images is
intriguing, from the sumptuously furnished studios of the late
Nineteenth Century to the austere workrooms of the present day
and from William Merrit Chase in a crisp painting smock to
Jackson Pollock crouching on the floor among his paint cans and
brushes.
The Fleischman Gallery is on the first floor of the Donald W.
Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture at Eighth and F
Streets NW. Hours are 11:30 am to 7 pm daily. Admission is free.
