George Jacobi, "All of It,” three-dimensional photo collage.
:Collages by Connecticut photographer George Jacobi are on view in the Community Gallery at the Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts through July 12 in an exhibition titled "Alternative Visual Energy."
Jacobi pushes photography beyond the traditional appearance using mixed media to create oversized images. By cutting, pasting and painting directly on photographs, he creates unique images. Jacobi began by experimenting with "photo-quilts" which involved weaving together vertical and horizontal slices cut from several different photographs.
By deviating from the common approach to photography, he creates a new art form in which photographs are the media not the medium. His artistic vision has led him to make increasingly complex two- and three-dimensional manipulations of photo-collage.
Jacobi is a resident of Mansfield, Conn., and a graduate of the University of Connecticut. He has exhibited widely in New England and has received several awards for his work.
The D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts is on the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street.
