Liquid States

NEW YORK CITY
: Seven large paintings and several drawings by Lorraine Shemesh will be on exhibition at the Allan Stone Gallery, 113 East 90th Street, in a show entitled "Liquid States" from April 29-June 11.

In this new series of work, Shemesh, a classical figurative painter, uses water to reach beyond the directly observed world and explore more abstract concerns. The surfaces have become impastoed - exploding with saturated color, seductive textures, and light.

Lorraine Shemesh's work has been shown at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her work is in many public collections including the Boise Art Museum in Idaho; the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Mass.; the Museum of the City of New York; and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence, R.I.

The Allan Stone Gallery opened in 1960 showing works by Willem de Kooning, Cesar, Joseph Cornell, Barnett Newman, and a host of then-emerging artists such as Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Estes, Robert Ryman, Eva Hesse and John Chamberlain. The gallery continues to show contemporary, mid-career and emerging artists while maintaining a tradition of expertise in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism (Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, John Graham)
