: To commemorate the fourth centenary of the Treaty of London
between England and Spain, which was negotiated and signed at
Somerset House in 1604, the Somerset House Trust and King's
College London have organized "Talking Peace 1604," a program of
events of which Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Chancellor
of the University of London, is patron.
The focal point of these celebrations is a special exhibition
entitled "Talking Peace 1604: The Somerset House Conference
Paintings" staged at the Gilbert Collection, Somerset House,
Strand, May 20 to July 25. This, together with a three-day
conference entitled "The Historical Context," a one-day
conference, "Literary Culture in Spain and England," various
seminars, lectures, concerts, as well as "Espana Viva," an
eight-week festival staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, will
explore the historical and cultural significance of this
diplomatic landmark.
