"Lilacs with Porcelain,"
Katherine Ann Hartley, oil on board.
NEW YORK CITY - The David Findlay Galleries will present an
exhibition of oil paintings by Katherine Ann Hartley through
September 28. The exhibition is composed of 16 new still-life
paintings. This will be Hartley's third solo show at the
galleries.
Hartley selects everyday objects such as antique bottles and
china, pewter and brass vessels, and various fruits and flowers
as her subject matter. Her pieces are arranged in informal
compositions on a shelf of rough-hewn wood in her studio in Cape
Cod.
The shelf and its contents are dramatically lighted by the
natural light streaming in from a north-facing window in the
studio. This beam of light, a prominent feature in her paintings,
is a style borrowed from the Old Masters of Dutch still life
painting.
David Findlay Galleries is at 984 Madison Avenue. For
