Electronic Ad Requirements & Guidelines

THE BASICS

The Antiques and The Arts Weekly and The Newtown Bee accept advertising materials on Zip Disks (100 MB OR 250 MB), Floppy Disks (3.5"), CDs, or by email. We can accept Mac or PC files; Stuffit or Winzip files, and PDFs. Email ad materials to ads@thebee.com

We can accept materials from the following software programs:

PCMAC
QuarkXPress 4.1QuarkXPress 6.1
Photoshop 6.0Photoshop CS (6)
PageMaker 6.5Adobe InDesign CS(3)
Microsoft Word 2000Microsoft: Word 2000
Adobe Acrobat 5.0Adobe Illustrator CS (11)
WinZipAdobe Acrobat 6.0
Aladdin StuffItAladdin StuffIt or WinZip

When sending ads in any of the above formats, include ALL essential components: fonts, photos, and art.

Please note: Ads built completely in Photoshop can create problems with outputting text. We suggest saving files with at least 300 dpi resolution as a TIFF or EPS.

We do not use Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher files to output camera ready ads. We will, however, use them as an ad layout example. When you send us these files, you must also send the photo and graphic files as well. Save Publisher files to Version 2000.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS

It is essential to name every photo you send uniquely. Images with the same name (such as mvc-001s) only create confusion and delay. Captions must be submitted as a list with the corresponding image name referenced.

We accept color or B&W photos as jpegs, tiffs, or eps. We prefer RGB color photos at 150 dpi. Image size of photos should be at least 3-4" wide/high at 150 dpi; and twice that when photos are 72 dpi. To help judge the proper size file to send, consider: 1) It is always better to have a larger file than needed, because digital images lose detail as they are enlarged; and 2) consider the size the image will appear in the print ad and make the digital file similar in size. Do not send GIFs or web thumbnail images. DO NOT send photos embedded in Microsoft Word documents. MAC users: Save JPEG images with a TIFF preview, not a PICT preview

Please note we have a 30% dot gain on our presses. We print with a 70 line screen and a round dot at a 45 degree screen angle. If adjusting the photo tones for camera ready ads, use the following tonal intensity levels: Highlights = 4%, Midtones = 20-40%, Shadows = 75-85%.

TEXT

We accept Microsoft Word files as rtf, doc or txt. We can attempt to recover text from Word Perfect and other word processing documents but are not always successful. If in doubt, copy your text directly into an email.

PDFs

PDFs are accpeted. We recommend using Acrobat Distiller to create PDFs rather than PDF Writer. Embed all fonts and save as Press Optimized.

InDesign Users: On the Export PDF window under "Advanced," set the Color setting to "Leave Unchanged."

FINALLY

Emails must be labeled correctly. Include the following in the email:

  1. The name of the advertiser and phone number.
  2. Which newspaper the ad should be placed in -- The Newtown Bee (Newtown's local paper) or the Antiques and The Arts Weekly and any special section if applicable.
  3. The date of the issue(s) to run, size of ad, and the name of your ad representative if you have one.
  4. Items included with the email (i.e., text, number of photos, logo, etc.).

Neglecting to include any of the above information into your email or with your disks could delay insertion or misdirect your ad!

The correct email address to send advertising and publicity materials is ads@thebee.com.

For further email questions, telephone The Antiques and The Arts Weekly at 203-426-8036; telephone The Newtown Bee at 203-426-3141, and ask to speak with Carol Fenn or Kristen Angell in the Production Department.
