: An art exhibit of American weathervanes from the collection of
the Antiquarian and Landmarks Society will be presented at the
Hartford Club at an opening reception on Thursday, February 9,
5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Visitors will be able to enjoy the whimsical designs of unique
historic weathervanes, mingle and have wine and hors d'oeuvres.
The weathervanes will be on view through February 17.
The weathervane truly embodies how the divine powers of the winds
have mystified man across centuries and continents. Primitive,
mystical designs that served the ancient Greeks and Vikings
evolved into patriotic symbols in early America, extreme
decorative designs in Victorian times, and back again to simpler
silhouettes in the early 1900s.

On display will be selected pieces from the Antiquarian &
Landmarks Society's collection of vane ornaments, produced in the
Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. At once both decorative
and practical, these weathervanes are a glimpse of craftsmanship
from another time. Here, form truly meets function.
Cost of the opening reception is $20 per person, and reservations
are required. For reservations, 860-522-1271.
The Hartford Club is at 46 Prospect Street.
The permanent exhibit of weathervanes is on display at the
Phelps-Hatheway House; call for details at 860-247-8996,
extension 12.
