| This Dover edition is a selection of illustrations taken from Les Cartes a Jouer du XIV au XX Siecle published by Librairie Hachette et Cie, Paris, in 1906. The compilation of designs includes a selection of figures and other subjects that decorated playing cards between the Fourteenth and Twentieth Centuries. Six hundred black and white illustrations and 325 color images depict humorous and satiric representations of Bacchus, death, dancing dogs, players cheating at cards, royal coats of arms, hunting scenes, and stylized versions of the king, queen and other face cards.
