| Self-described as the "first book to focus specifically on [1920's to 1930's] eclectically profuse ceramics," Art Deco and Modernist Ceramics is also accurately characterized a "visual reference." A four-page preface is followed by a compendious, 20-page introduction by ceramic historian Garth Clark, which provides a survey of ceramic art and design from 1919 to 1939. The meat of the publication, however, may be found in the successive 287 well-executed photographs (201 in color) illustrating quintessential examples of the period. International creations are sequentially presented country by country, from Germany to Japan, Straatliche Majolika-Manufaktur to Noritake. A useful, 54-page "A-Z" directory of ceramists, designers and factories rounds out this offering, best seen as providing a solid base for beginning collectors.
