| Hampel, also the author of Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland, Watches that Wind Themselves (Schiffer, 1995), has produced a well-photographed, technical volume on self-winding watches from around the globe, with an emphasis on those made in Germany and Japan. "The multitude of pre-1970 Japanese automatic watch production is not widely known," writes Hampel, "and a comparison of automatic chronograph wristwatches in Germany, which were very popular during the 1970s, has not been attempted before." The history of the wristwatch industry in each country is examined first, followed by particular company histories. Caliber development and descriptions accompany 123 watches featured, along with black and white or color photographs of the dial, the movement, and the partially dismantled movement. Function and construction details will help the collector to date a timepiece. An appendix, a glossary, and an index of names and terms are included with 28-source bibliography and price guide.
