Book Review

Denis Coutagne

By Denis Coutagne

Four beautiful little volumes have been released by Universe Publishing in conjunction with The Vendome Press. The 6 by 9 inch books examine four French Impressionist and Post Impressionist artists in a compelling, original fashion, complete with color reproductions of paintings and period photographs of interiors. The French art historian Denis Coutagne examines the paintings executed by Paul Cezanne in his native Provence, the world around Aix that provided the key to the master's oeuvre. This was the realm of color and chiaroscuro in which Cezanne formulated his artistic theories and painted his greatest masterpieces. Degas Dancers examines the backstage world of the Paris Opera Ballet with a thoroughness achieved by no other artist. His searching, relentless eye captured ballerinas in bronze as well as on canvas. Richard Kendall's analysis coincides with the Degas retrospective, which opened at the Art Institute of Chicago in September. The naked female form was a source of inspiration for Pierre Auguste Renoir throughout his long and brilliant career. In Renoir Nudes, Isabelle Cahn discusses Renoir's scenes of bathers, intimate portraits and color sketches, providing a comprehensive overview of the artist's oeuvre. In 1917, at the height of war, Henri Matisse heeded the call of Nice, where he renewed his art through exposure to the color and radiance of the French Riviera. He remained there while making his art ever more luminous and optimistic, a valiant assertion of important human values in the face of barbarism and devastation.
