On October 23rd, Sterling Associates Inc, will present their Fine Art & Antique Auction, featuring the ESTATE OF JOHN B. McDONALD. John B. McDonald, was the chief of staff to Senator Cardinale for nearly twenty years. Highlighted in this auction from his Bergen County, NJ Estate are 200 lots of fine art, furniture, lighting, crystal and art glass from his collection.
Featured in the fine art selection is "The Wolf Hunt", a monumental hunt scene o/c signed: R. Frentz, Russian as well as a signed o/c landscape painting by Felix Ziem; with a plaque that reads: St. Peters Rome, Felix Ziem 1821-1911 and a signed o/c "On the River" with a plaque that reads: Cesare Auguste Detti, 1847 Italian 1914. An impressive patinated bronze sculpture, Child of Peace, by Edward Fenno Hoffman III, American, signed on base: Edward F. Hoffman III 1961 and stamped on base: Modern Art Foundry, New York, NY was a beloved piece to Mr. McDonald. A vast collection of crystal and glass including; but not limited to Ruby, Depression, Vaseline, Humbnail and Carnival are being offered.
An American Pine dresser/desk that spans 5 generations of McDonalds at Villanova University as well as a Center Hall Marquetry table are among the many
furniture pieces. A 4' monumental cut crystal vase is not to be missed. Victorian
Parlor lamps, Lladros, punch bowls, teapots, and a variety of porcelain smalls
round out the remainder of the Estate. The auction continues with over 550 lots of 19th Century American and European Fine Art, Dolls, Bronzes, Sculptures, Jewelry, Clocks, Lighting, Asian Art and Porcelain.
Highlighted in those lots are a Francis Augusts Silva o/c Hook Mountain Nyack, NY in original gilded frame Hudson River Luminism Style. The o/c is signed: Silva and a beautiful landscape o/c influenced by the Hudson River School by George Inness The plaque reads: George Inness 1825-1894 and the o/c is signed G Inness. Over 40 lots of dolls some dating back to WWI, a rare grouping of Raggedy Ann and Andy and many Jumeau, Kestner and Handwerk will be featured in the sale. Steif and Knickerbocker toys will also be available. Other top lots include: A rare 16th Century Flemish tapestry, a dore over bronze figural sculpture signed E. Fremiet by Emmanuel Fremiet, French and a collection of large figural bronzes including Mary and Jesus and Martin Luther King cast in the 1940's.
The Asian Collection is comprised of very fine porcelain vases, paintings and
watercolors, embroideries, jade, chargers and vessels and a late 19th Century Cloisonne Censor. Among the fine jewelry collection is a 1.12 carat diamond ring, a
beautiful ruby and pearl 14kt gold watch and a collection of pocket watches. An
outdoor garden bench and garden sculptures add a flare to this grand Fall event!
