TENNIS AUCTION, ANYONE? Guernsey's to present Tennis history at the US Open

The first major Tennis Auction in the United States is being held most appropriately at this year's US Open (the world's most well-attended sporting event) beginning at the end of August and continuing through mid-September. Literally thousands of exciting and historic objects relating to the game will be offered at live public auction with a portion of the proceeds going to USTA Serves, the non-profit arm of the United States Tennis Association which encourages children to pursue their goals and highest dreams by succeeding in school and becoming responsible citizens. Guernsey's, the auction house responsible for events ranging from the John F. Kennedy to Elvis Presley to Mickey Mantle auctions, is conducting the two day sale.

Bill Tilden to Billie Jean King to John McEnroe to the Williams sisters. Greats from the past... greats from today. All will be represented in this extraordinary event where bidders will have a chance to vie for historic racquets, fabulous trophies (you may not have won at Wimbledon but at this Auction you can bid on several genuine Wimbledon trophies!), tournament-worn outfits (like Bobby Riggs "Sugar Daddy" tennis duds he wore in the famed "Battle of the Sexes" match, Bill Tilden's Wimbledon sweater and Maria Sharapova's lovely tennis dress worn just weeks ago at Wimbledon), original tennis artwork (from George Bellows' Newport scene to Leroy Neiman's portrait of Arthur Ashe), rare books (did you know that the first book about tennis was printed in 1555 and two of the twelve known copies are in this sale) and vintage photography, graphic posters, unusual artifacts and collectible memorabilia all from a game loved by millions.

The preview exhibition will start on the first day of the Open (August 31) and continue each day through the actual auction dates of September 11 and 13.The 13th is the last day of the Open with the concluding Men's Finals match following the Auction. Both the preview and auctions will be taking place in the handsome new Indoor Training Center, just yards away from Arthur Ashe Stadium on the National Tennis Center's grounds in New York City. Naturally, those with tickets for the Open will have full access to the preview and auctions but those without seats for the Tournament can purchase a $5 grounds pass which will provide the same access. Those unable to attend the Open can bid online in real time at liveauctioneers.com.
