A documented oil painting by John Singer Sargent highlights an impressive list of Fine Art to be offered on Day One, including works by Andrew Wyeth, Robert Dunning, Jack Gray, and Alessandro Magnasco, plus old master portraits in the manner of Lucas Cranach the Elder and Balthasar van der Ast. Gilt bronze and wood figures from the 15th through 17th centuries top an impressive list of European, African, Indian and Oriental three-dimensional work. A rare 1764 Sea Chart Atlas by Joseph Roux is only 1 of 6 examples known to exist. Other I important ephemera include the 1633 Botanical Book by John Gerard, Civil War medical papers and correspondence of Dr David Merritt, a 1595 edition of Dante, important early Bibles and several lots of Civil War journals, and autographs. Fine American furniture include a set of 8 circa 1790 mahogany Hepplewhite side chairs, a circa 1775 Boston serpentine front desk, a Chippendale walnut chest-on-chest, a circa 1790 cherry chest-on-chest and a circa 1790 Massachusetts mahogany card table. We are excited to offer 16 lots of 19th c. Japanese miniatures, including furniture, weapons, figures, & musical instruments, over 300 individual pieces in all. A collection of Mechanical Shooting Gallery fixtures from 19th c. Eastern Europe will be offered. Examples of antique carpets and rugs include; Chinese palace size, signed ca. 1900 Persian, ca 1900 Heriz, ca 1890 Lillihan and ca 1890 Sumac plus a rare pictorial silk rug depicting King Solomon, 50 carpets in all. Native American artifacts, firearms including a rare Stone Bow Crossbow, 5 early samplers, 3 tall case clocks, rosewood and mahogany barometers, and a fine selection of European and Chinese porcelain complete this first day. Day Two includes 20th c. artwork by Milton Avery, Marguerite Zorach, Waldo Pierce, Jean Salabet, Gifford Beal and Cadwallader Washburn, plus an original theatre poster of Sarah Bernhardt by Alphonse Mucha. Sculpture by Cabot Lyford and Charles Oaks, plus 6 bronze pieces will be offered. 50 lots of fine porcelain and pottery include a monumental French Jardiniere and a rare KPM footed bowl. Theatrical memorabilia, first editions and rare early literature include an original manuscript of the Christmas Carol It Came Upon A Midnight clear. A 1970s Saporiti Italian chair, a set of 12 carved dining chairs and a circa 1900 parlor suite head the 19th & 20th c. furniture section. Sparkling diamonds, rubies and emerald jewelry, 120 lots in all, will take center stage on Day Two along with a 17 Daum Nancy vase, Livio Seguso glass sculpture, rare art Nouveau sterling tray, 4 chandeliers, and a Tiffany beaded purse. There are carpets, violins, mink coats and gleaming silver to round out this day of treasures.
