Historically significant unsgnd James Sharples (British 1751-1811) 18thC 10 x 8 pastel portrait of George Washington Lafayette (Born Dec 24, 1779). Christies of London sold this w a collection of several other Sharples paintings. Supposition is that this painting was executed at Mt Vernon during Sharples stay in the 1790's when young Lafayette was sent to live w Washington by the American Ambassador in Paris, James Monroe (see more fine early portraits on the website) | Another historically significant item is this very early 19thC magnificently detailed 19 x 34 Important w/c depicting ships leaving the harbor in the Black Sea with inscriptions on front & verso.This spectacular painting descended in the Charles W. Most important Eastern VA extremely fine & rare Hepplewhite D-shaped mahog card table beautifully inlaid w satinwood, ebony & walnut featuring cotton flower, shell, bellflower & icicle embellishments (the best card table we've ever sold & arguably the most important Southern period card table to come to auction) |  Most important period painted furniture includes the Dennett Family ladies 2 drawer pine dressing table w exceedingly rare Rufus Porter painted surface. This table was made by the Boston cabinet maker Alexander Dennett in the 1820's as a wedding gift for his wife. He and his family moved to Hollis, ME in 1826 & settled on the Saco River in the Salmon Falls section of town. Rufus Porter was in Salmon Falls around this time painting murals on homes.The style of painting, the man in the boat, the yellow house w a lighthouse & the fact that the paint is applied with transparent glazes are all strong connections to Porter's work.The rosebud on the side was painted with a stencil that matches what Porter used when he decorated the Fitch-Grout house. Retaining the orig grungy surface & still displaying its bright painted colors, this table is a fine orig example of early 19thC rural Maine furniture w decoration by the most important New England itinerant folk artist of the time.There are only about 30 pcs of ptd furniture known that have been attrib to Rufus Porter. |
