Recently purchased an etching signed by Ernest Christian Rost, dated 1893. It isn't titled. There is a civil war era house with white columns in the the right of the scene. A rather large tree in front of the house. To the left is a stone foot bridge over a stream. There is also a church steeple in the scene. I am quite sure it is in the original frame, which contains some metal, on the corners. Any ideas of its value or its name? Would appreciate any info. - Nancee: 8/27/2009 2:19:59 AM

I have an Ernest C. Rost signed etching titled, "The Old Homestead." I also have a G.W. Bohde signed etching titled, "Home by the Lake." These two etchings are very similar. The letters (handwriting) in both titles are almost identical, as if the same person wrote them. Is there any connection between Bohde and Rost, other than the fact that they both etched during the late 1800's? - daisygore: 5/24/2009 11:41:49 AM

I have a copyrighted by Fishel, Adlar and Schawartz of New York etching print by Ernest C. Rost dated 1891. The size of my etching itself (not including matte area and frame) is 29 1/2" x 19". In the foreground is a road that crosses a wooden bridge over a stream. The road meanders to a cottage on the left which is bordered by a stone wall. There is a barn behind the cottage that has an overhang in front of it that comes to the edge of the road. The road looks as though it continues to two faint houses in the distance along with a church that has a tall steeple. To the right after crossing the bridge in the foreground, there are large trees with a split-rail fence meandering amongst them. In the distance behind the trees, you can see two small houses. The print is not titled. In the bottom left of the etching in the grass, is Ernest C. Rost's signature and the date 1891. In the bottom left matte border there is a remarque of a tree limb with a bird sitting in its nest and another bird standing on a limb. On the lower right matte border of the etching is Ernest C. Rost's signature in pencil. The etching is on a board about 1/8" thick and on the back of that board is the number 6682. There is another board to the back of the etching that says framed at Wannamaker's, Philadelphia, PA, 1973. I bought this at an auction because I loved the landscape. I would love to know it's title and worth just to see if I got a bargain? - Mary Ann: 5/12/2008 3:37:56 PM

Directly across is another patch of land with a house, church and maybe lighthouse, although the top is round like something you would see in Russia. Anyoned find any word on Rost? I have an old piece that, after researching, looks to be one of the original prints before mass production, according to one site, that has a signature in the lower right, a small image in the white border on the bottom left, and a PRINT like etching in the bottom left that says ECrost 1890 and looks like the S was written over another letter like a mistake. Can anyone tell me where to get more informatin or what this might be worth. Again, I believe it to be one of the originals in the original frame. - ecrost?: 3/11/2005 6:05:33 PM

I have a pencil signed on the right lower bottom by A. C. Yates, published by James Tyroler. I cannot find anything on this publisher or A. C. Yates the artist. The print is identical to the ernest C Rost pencil that everyone here is talking about. On the left side of the road going through the village is 2 houses and a small creek and 2 dead trees, and on the right side of the road is a church and a few more houses. Also a shamrock in the middle bottom below the pencil. It is 24 by 10 in size. any help would be appreciated. - Rick H: 9/1/2004 8:54:20 PM
I own asigned E.C.Rost print of an old Irish-looking homestead. It also has a shamrock "stamp" below the print on the left hand side. It is copywrighted Radk & Laukner 1893. The frame is original, and it measures 29x15. What is the value? Thanks - janmoney2004: 8/27/2004 1:27:15 PM

It is in good condition, in original decorative wood frame and has "copyrighted 1895 by HC Rost" in upper left corner and signed in pencil in lower right hand by HCRost All the info I have read so far refers to ECRost. Does anyone have any insight re this? It is a wonderful sketch. - curious: 8/15/2004 10:38:35 PM
Hello. I know many people want more information about Ernest C. Rost, Christian Rost, the value of their works, etc. I'm an enthusiastic, amateur collector and have recently posted a website dedicated to the works of Ernest Christian Rost, Christian Wilhelm Rost (his father) and Miles Ernest Rost (his son). The Home page and bio are up and running and the rest of the links will be available by the end of the year -- displaying many of his works, variants of his signatures and remarques and auction results, et. The site: www.ernestrost.org Feel free to contact me if you have questions. If I can be of assistance I will. I'm also looking for copies of Rost's etching: "The Edge of the Forest" Sincerely, Jonathan RostInfoseek@aol.com  - Jonathan: 8/4/2004 11:11:52 PM
e.c. rost was amoung the most prolific american etchers of the late 1800's. And while he gave up etching at a young age, he did create a large body of work. I have collected his etchings for 15 yrs and im trying to catalogue all his work, if you care to help, please email me a photo of your work by him. and any info on the print. thanks in advance, gary gnaterrph@aol.com - gary: 8/1/2004 4:58:55 PM
HELLO Everyone!! I have a C.Rost called "The Little Wanderer" a picture of a little boy in the home of a grandmother and mother telling his story to the grandmother as the other childern listen. The boy has a stick with a cloth like that of a hobo. The scene is inside the house with the front door slightly open to reveal the detailed outside....Beautiful.. litho. The print is dated C.Rost "exclusively for members of the Crosby Opera House 1866". The Opera house burned down five years later in the "Great Fire of Chigago" which lead to the fire codes we now live by in order to prevent another such catastrophe. I have not yet seen another print and am beginning to think that not many were printed depending on the number of Opera house members (and how many were distributed amoungst friends who worked at the Opera House). This one Came out of my Great Uncles House after his death. My grandfather was about to toss it into a rented dumpster with the tons of junk my Great uncle had aquired in his lifetime. I took the print and am too an admirer of C.Rost, father of E.C. Rost. Scott......Prodigggy@yahoo.com - scott: 7/25/2004 9:35:19 PM
E.C. Rost was a son of a printer in the central (sw of Albany ) area of NY state. He had 2 brothere. I am not sure if Christian was father or brother - I found the info by searching in the fine arts/prints info at the Smithsonian Institution. I own an artist proof of "A Glimpse of the Village"(original drawing may be Charles F. W. Mielatz, who pencil signed it, acc'dg to an appreaiser)& "may Morning" - Judy: 7/14/2004 11:55:42 AM
I have an etching of EC Rost titled "Restful Twilight" Aprrox 12" x 25". I can't seem to find a date on it though. Anyone have any info on this etching? - Joe Allen: 7/4/2004 7:21:51 AM
My dad left me a Ernest C. Rost Etching of "The Old Elm Tree." The image area is 26" x 15" approximately, and it's in a mahogony-like frame appropximately 33" x 23" Aside from sentimental value, is there any monetary value to the piece? Thanks I - malsrus: 6/28/2004 9:17:13 AM
I am an antiques dealer in Connecticut specializing in prints, and in particular etchings done in the period 1885-1935. I’ve sold many etchings by Ernest C. Rost and others who worked in the same style (Haller, Bohde, Volkmar, E.L. Field, Anderson, etc., there are lots of others). These etchings were a form of “common man’s” art at the time, but that isn’t meant to be a “put down” at all. They are popular now as they were then because they are charming, soothing and easy on the eye. When I buy them, I will always put on a new acid free mat and often replace the old, beat-up frame with something better. As far as value is concerned, you will find these etchings selling generally between $20-200, depending on size, condition, subject and condition of the frame. Condition is a real problem with these pieces. There were generally done on a poor quality of paper and often mounted on an equally poor quality backing board. They do not respond well do treatment/cleaning. Furthermore, they were sometimes backed with pinewood, which is very acidic. Acid would leach out of the cut ends of the wood and “burn” right through the paper causing a streak to appear in the image. You will also see circular burn marks which are caused by acid leaching out of pine knots. And to top it all off, the mats used at the time were poor quality paper and did the prints no good. It’s difficult to find anything biographically about these people. Rost was the most prolific, but the closest I have ever found to information on him is another artist Christian Rost, who I believe was a relative. Often they were painters as well as etchers. I think many of them knew each other through membership in the Salamagundi Club in New York City, a gathering place for artists of the era. The heyday for these pieces was 1885-1905. The small secondary etching that you often see in the lower left (under the main image) is called a “remarque” and was simply a stylistic custom of the time. Has nothing to do with value. The remarque is not a trademark of the etcher, rather it ties in with the larger scene and is often a reverse view. It serves something of the same purpose as the overture does to the opera. They were almost always distributed by art publishing houses in New York, whose names will appear in the upper left, often with the publication date. Sometimes they are dated within the image. Sometimes they are pencil signed, sometimes not. Sometimes titled, but not necessarily. Again, these pieces were not considered high quality art at the time and are more intended to be decorative and enjoyed by ordinary folks. Hope this helps!  - nothingtohide: 5/15/2004 4:06:47 PM

I have a pair of what I believe are photogravure reproductions of two etchings by Ernest C. Rost. Both were published by Fishel, Adler & Schwartz, New York. One is titled "The Evening Hour". The other is titled "The Old Millbrook" and dated '92. Both are in matching one inch dark oak frames with a gilt liner and are 26" x 11 1/4". They hung in my grandparents front hall. I am curious to know the date-range for reproductions of Rost's etchings and whether they continued to be reproduced by Fishel, Adler & Schwartz following his suit against them. I have always thought that these reproductions dated from the time of my grandparents wedding in 1912 which is almost 20 years after the 1894 law suit.  - Officer Rick: 4/16/2004 11:40:50 AM
I have a pencil etching signed Ernest C. Rost, titled Autumn Breezes. It appears to be an original frame with square head nails. There is no date on the painting. I will appreciate any information on this etching. - bindavis: 3/28/2004 6:58:49 PM
I have an etching by Earnest C. Rost. It is titled "Springtime" etched by Earnest C. Rost and is written in large script in the lower right hand corner. On the left hand corner of the picture "proper" is the signature - "E.C.. Rost, 1891". It had some water damage to it so I took it out of its frame. I do not have it's orignal mat but I do have the orignal frame. It does need a professional cleaning. I would like to know it's value. - josal: 3/27/2004 7:51:33 PM
I just purchased and Ernest C. Rost etching. It's 8 x 13 and has a rabbit in the lower left corner below the body of the picture. Does anyone have a similar marking? This is of a country lane with a small mill and pond on the right and large gnarled tree in the foreground and to the left of the mill is a smaller tree. At the vanishing point of the lane is a small house and a church steeple is visible in the wooded background to the right. Publisher is Fishel Adler and Schwartz.  - nomini3@aol.com: 3/23/2004 8:32:45 PM
I have an E C Rost Etching in its original frame - dated 1890 - unusually It is in England as my research on Rost seems to suggest that most of his works have stayed in the US. This piece is untitled, features a country road running down to a lake, past a small dwelling on the left and large trees (birches?) on the right. Any information would much appreciated. - Gareth: 3/19/2004 7:56:15 AM

We have an etching by EC Rost titled "At the Old Meeting House" etched by Ernest C. Rost. Ths title in in the lower right hand corner. In the lower right hand corner is EC Rost 1890. In the upper right hand corner is: Copyright, 1890 by Fischel, Adler & Schwartz, New York. The etching is 11 1/2" by 31 1//2" and is relatively good condition. It could use a good cleaning by a professional restorer. As far as we can tell, my Grandparents bought the etching sometime in the 1920's. It appears to be in an original gilt frame. We are located in North Carolina. - cornax: 2/24/2004 10:06:56 AM

I have one too, of a Waterfall, with a large tree and dead branch dated 1890. Signed in a thick pencil Edward C Rost on lower right corner outside frame area and inside E C Rost as part of the etching. It has an unusual marking (looks like a printers mark to check the quality of the print) in the lower left hand corner outside the frame area. It looks like a blossom of some sort. Came in a mahogony frame. Found it in a basement of an old 1920 victorian house in Huntington, NY in 1984. Upper left corner has "Copyright 1890 by Fishel,Adler & Schwartz, New York If you have any information, let me know.  - Charlie: 10/18/2003 3:07:02 PM

My family has an etching by E.C. Rost titled, "Lake Hopatcong". It is dated 1890. Signed in lower left of etching by EC Rost 1890. Signed in hand writing, Lake Hopatcong, Etched by Ernest C. Rost in lower right on matting. Reads Copyright 1890. by Fishel Adler & Schwartz, New York in the upper right on the matting. It is my belief that the scene is from Bertrand Island, when there were stone walls leading to a small bridge linking Bertrand Island to the mainland in which horse and buggy and eventually automobiles crossed from Mt. Arlington. In 1890, there was a clubhouse on Bertrand Island, known as the Bertrand Island Club. It was a mens club, typical at that time. A place to hunt, fish, play cards and drink whiskey. During the summer, club members took turns bringing families to the lake. The club was destroyed by fire in the 1890's. Lake Hopatcong has a rich history as a vacation spot for New Yorkers. The etching was purchased by my father in the 1960's from a sale at an historic home called "The Castle", in Mt. Arlington. P.S. It is not for sale.  - TADonofrio: 8/24/2003 10:44:49 AM
