Has anyone heard of an artist who painted in Paris, in oils, named M. Legendre? I have a painting by him and was curious when he painted. Thanks! - scribe0: Oct 21 2001 2:20PM

I also am seeking info on M. Legrende still. Will the person I used to be writing to write back to me. I don't have my Davenport email any more so I lost your address. I love to see all these questions. Wouldn't it be nice if they had pictures attached? Don't you people know how to post thumbnails. On second though they don't really give any directions. - chris: 2/3/2010 8:41:04 PM
I have a watercolor, or a print of a watercolor, and with a big red boat sailing down of the Eiffel Tower. On the left below it says Maurius { Matrico?} Girard. Onthe right below it says 5[ or s]La tour. Wish I knew where is. But, as to worth, I bought it for a thrift store for $4.00. But I love it it's more than [a lot more] that tome. I too, have a print by Girard of Paris, Notre Dame. does this have any value since so many seem to have these prints? - dokami: 9/20/2009 4:02:45 PM
I hold a print of Paris-Notre Dame by M. Legendry. Bottom cream border has handwritten in pencil Paris- Notre-Dame. His name is signed on bottom of actual print. the name is hard to tell if it is "e" at end with a drop down line or a "y". I bought because I liked the print as well..it is on heavy paper, framed and sealed by a professional. There is no stamp on the backside. - SQuinell: 9/14/2009 7:56:06 AM

Wow! My husband and I just recently came across our water paintings by Marius Girard. We have "PARIS - La Sainte Chapelle - La Conciergerie - La Tour Eiffel and Paris Le Moulin Rouge. They are simply beautiful... We placed them just above a light to show them off. I am suprised that no one seems to be able to put a price value on such wonderful art! They are worth a lot to us. If any one does find out the value please let us know.debanddno@q.com - Deb Gates: 6/20/2009 10:11:33 PM

I have two paintings by Marius Girard (Sacre Coem & Notre Dame) Any idea of age and value. - kim: 6/7/2009 11:21:58 AM
I bought 2 water colors, from the artist, in Paris in March of 1963. They are of prominate Paris street scenes and signed by M. Leyendry. The first has written in the lower border on the left side "Paris - Arc de Triamphe(maybe o instead of a) e?les Champs Elysees". The second Has the on the left side of the lower border "Eifel Point Alexander II". These were painted on boards...does that mean they are originals rather than prints? I'm not having any luck attaching photos of the water colors to this e-mail but anyone can e-mail me and I will send them through regular e-mail. I am looking for any info available about value and the artist. I see from all the posts on this forum that not much has come to light so far. Many years ago about 1969 when I taught TV,radio and communications at the University of Hartford my wife and I took a weekend trip to Vermont and we found a very interesting tin-type in a beautiful Walnut an gold leaf frame... We bought the picture and took it back to Hartford, where we found a picture, (landscape with what looks like N.H. White Mts. in the background with a fence row and lake in the foreground with trees, etc. in the center...) The artist name is La Rve... Is this a known New England artist? In recent years I wrote four books, all published and appeared on over 3,000 TV shows to help consumers save money on their food bills... This lead to a nationally syndicated TV series with my "Making Ends Meet" book to go with the name sake Dell book.... We now live on a Mt. in beautiful central Alabama and friends last night suggested we try to find out about this mystery painting... Does anyone know who LaRve was? It sounds French! Please let me know... Jon McClure - Jon Arlen McClure: 5/12/2009 9:17:58 PM

I have a signed original painting by Marius Girard. Taped to the back was a newspaper article from Nov. 19,1972 from Lorain,Ohio. He was visiting friends and was 45 years old at the time. He became wealthy through French poatcards, creating an original then bought by a printing house ,lithographed and printed in blocks of 100,000. He was born in Rheims, and his only occupation has been as an artist. The article tells about his techniques and how he does his paintings. He also did watercolors for the lobby of the Hotel Hilton in Paris. If you are interested in a copy of the article, contact me at Jennygoldenbee@ aol.com - jenny: 8/13/2008 3:22:39 AM

I have a wonderful signed water color by Marius Girard of a Sacre Coeur scene. It was purchased at a yard sale in Colorado last year and I knew immediately when I saw it that it was special. I agree with Terri Spanjer's statement about this wonderful artist. Too bad we cannot find out more info about him. I would never let it go, but would love to know the value of his work. - J Bell: 5/15/2008 12:38:52 PM
I have Two prints of Torello Moricci 94-L'Amo e il ponte Vecchio Edizoni nova lux-flrenze they are great I dont know any about artist and history and maybe what its worth - lucy: 5/7/2008 7:44:37 PM
Well, everyone seems to love Marius Girard, yet his name goes unrecorded in art catalogues, and only a few owners of his works actually purchased theirs from him directly - on the street in Montmarte, for example. I have a framed watercolour entitled "PARIS - La Sainte Chapelle - La Conciergerie - La Tour Eiffel". It is simply beautiful. Girard has an extraordinary gift for colouring - very painstaking, deliberate, and with a unique flare. He reflects images in the Seine and halos La Tour Eiffel, as well as giving character to every image he includes by use of multicoloured misty veils. I hope he is still alive to see the great interest his wonderful images have given rise to. - T. Spanjer, Canada - Terri Spanjer: 4/24/2008 1:01:06 PM
i have some prints michel thomas can anyone tell me anything about him or her please thankyou - cindy: 4/24/2008 1:43:33 AM
I have 3 paintings signed be M. Legendre(y). I purchased them from the painter at Wethersfield AFB, England in 1961. They are all scenes of Paris. One message I read said they had a contact with him in 1997 in France and he was 97 at that time, so the age would be correct. I am curious to know if that is my artist and if these paintings are of any value. vicki B - vicki: 4/14/2008 10:33:11 PM

I found a signed print of Renoir's Le moulin de la galette and wondering what it may be worth? - sbfrazee: 4/6/2007 11:11:19 AM
I am an art dealer who specializes in Parisian scenes from the Belle Epoch (turn of the century) and I have and come across watercolors by Herbelot all of the time. Unfortunately, I have never come across a dealer much less any referenced books that mention him. Please note that he produced many lithographs (multiples) that the size and number of the image were penciled in the lower rigth or left corner and some orginal watercolors. The lithos have little other than decorative art value ($25-$100) while the watercolors generally fetch between $100-$250. Although he was apparently sucessful enough to sell and publish many views of Paris, Italy and even a few of Wash DC he seems destined to be forgotten and never seriously appreciated by the buying public. - JMZ: 2/24/2007 12:19:23 PM

We have an oil of Place de la Concorde, Paris (rainy, darker day) by M. Leg(y)endre (signed on painting and on back). We bought it, I believe, when it was part of art-for-sale in the USAF housing area (Sarrebourg, FR) associated with the USAF base at Phalsbourg, FR - probably bought 1959. If this is the same Maurice, he did lots of Paris scenes! Aspireauctions.com had a ML sell for $184. When? I wish I had bought something which had appreciated more in almost 50 years! - Tom: 10/27/2006 2:48:42 PM

I've just acquired two nice prints: One has Rothenburg O.d.t. Plonlein (or Planlein with an umlaud over the first vowel). One is called Berehtesgaden (or something close to that) - Ramsau. They are both signed M Leyendre or Leyendry (the last letter looks more like a "y" to me than an "e". I am an artist and studied art history, but have never heard of this artist. I just liked the prints. - shawniemar: 2/5/2004 10:15:49 PM

I have recently purchased 4 prints of the M. leyendry. Moulin rouge, Vue Panaramique, Notre Dam la nuit, Notre dam es le square viviani. In reading each of the responses i have learned alot of the artist, but am now curious as to the value of each print which has the title of the piece hand printed yet the sig is printed with actual piece.in all the prints he underlined the last "E" once but for the print of "le nuit" it's underlined 2 times. If anyone has a ruogh estimate of each piece fell free to contact me. thanks for the knowledge of the artist, it helped alot. - botomboiintrudr: 12/1/2003 12:51:08 AM

I know that he painted in the 1960's because I bought one of his paintings in 1963 at the Officer's Club on Evreux-Fauville Air Base in Evreux, France. I also have an 8" x 16" watercolor by him of the backside of Notre Dame cathedral done from the west bank of the Seine river. - davecotton: 2/26/2003 9:11:41 PM

I have 4 Paris street scenes, oil on canvas. Expensively framed, Louis XVI, 24-k gold etched. Brought to the US by a collector around 1960. I located the painter 5 years ago; he was 97 at the time. I have owned these paintings since 1980 and did some research in Paris in 1986. Feel free to contact me @ rmeehan2@tampabay.rr.com - ejm6: 12/5/2002 1:31:23 AM
I had a painting by M. Legendre that I picked up at a thrift store for $15.OO and was trying to find out everything I could about it, but didn't have much luck. It was a painting on a board of an outside street scene. The same thrift store had a poster style print by the same artist, but I only bought the painting. Unfortunately, without my knowledge, my husband threw the painting in the trash. I am very upset about it, and would still be interested in finding out about the artist.  - tookerdoo: 11/27/2002 1:56:42 AM

Apparently an M. Legendre painting of Rue de Sidi Okba, Algérie sold in Paris in 2000 for $1402 (Artprice.com). They call him/her a 19th/20th c. painter. There is also a Maurice Legendre, but I think his style is more abstract - litchfield-auctions: 10/18/2002 4:28:26 PM
