Question
I recently acquired this print of a scene in Venice,Italy with a gondolla coming out from under a bridge to let the riders out at a staircase. Has several old buildings in the scene. Artist is Claude Dorval and it was printed by: Boren Mfg.Co. Chicago. Would appreciate any info on artist, value or even time line when the Mfg. company existed. Thankyou.Bonnie - Bonnie: Oct 24 2001 8:02AM

It looks arabia because the women are covered by cloth and their is a round arch moonshape in the niddle. It has Latessa written on the bottom right of the old print but I have no year or value of the item or history? Any idea the history of Latessa prints? Are they a manufacture or a person??? - Willey: 10/31/2009 7:39:09 PM

I have a print by LaTessa called "Villa del Amore". Thus far, I have been unable to find any information about it. It has been around for quite a while. It may have belonged to the mother of one of my grandmother's 1/2 sisters. It's a lovely Venician scene, with bright yellow buildings and aqua blue sky, a bridge with gondolas passing underneath, and people passing a flower stand. - KateT: 8/3/2009 6:46:03 PM

I have a framed 36x24 landscape painting by R. Boren. It appears to me to be an original oil of a peaceful river with majestic mountains in the background. Foliage on trees in foreground would indicate a fall scene in the Rockies (perhaps) Seeking any info on this artist - painting belonged to my mother-in-law and was puchased in the late 60's early 70's. - Ron: 6/12/2009 9:23:11 AM

I have a framed print of what looks like a Greek woman with a cloth headband holding a pack of some sort that has what appears to be a wood frame with broken threads attached to the top. I suppose it might even be a cradle of some sort for a baby. There is an arrow faintly disable on the top as if the artist is depicting a shooting star. The subject is sitting on a mound like half of a round sphere in the middle of the sea perhaps. She is bare foot. The colors are all mossy blue-green and some shades of yellow for the flesh tones. It is very muted and soft. Just would like to know about the artist It says at the bottom right 1925 Borin MFG. CO. CHICAGO No Author signature - sioda: 2/14/2008 4:09:56 PM

It is in the original frame that looks a little battered but it is in good shape. It is in black and white with a little bit of teal color added her and there. - joannehelfer: 11/11/2007 11:21:22 PM

I just received a print by claude dowal called English Streets, signed by him in pencil in a very old frame, along with a print by will onthwaite, any info on how much there worth would be greatly helpful. You can e-mail me at hols.eth@hotmail.com. - holseth, Eric: 7/8/2007 10:20:57 PM
I have purchased a watercolor from the 60's, for a couple of bucks. The frame was quite worn, so I decided to replace it. The 1st thing I saw was it was backed by a portion of "Stowaway" starring Shirley Temple. It says she speaks and sings in Chinese. Then, in between the watercolor and the very OLD advertisement was a "spooky" (as my daughter called it) litho print. It, too, as the person before me described, a painting of an old water wheel by an abandoned building with much dead, dark, dreariness about it. It has the same Master Art Corp Chicago on left bottom, and looks like Claude Dowal is penciled in on right bottom. I've only found 2 other web sites, gall.art.net and live auctioneers.com, that has any info on him. The second site has 4 different pieces and they are very expensive. I think I'll old on to mine. It's in mint condition. If anyone else has additional on this man and his work, please post. Thanks, Robin. - Miss Robin: 5/14/2007 3:34:42 AM
We purchased A Claude Dorval painting at an estate sale and wish to know something about it. Claude Dorval signed the painting on the right hand corner and Master Art Corporation - Chicago is on the left corner of the painting. Please help with information. - JR: 4/13/2007 6:24:36 PM

I an original print, with original matting and in original frame. It is by Claude Durval or Claude Dowal, hard to see. The signature is on the right in pencil on the mallest part of mat and on the right I think it says Knight Road. Cart drawn by horse with a covered load on a road with shimmering water in the ruts. Does anyone have any idea who might contact to get just a rough estimate on its worth? I am sure it is very old and everything is original. janice819 5/20/2006 6:41PM - janice819: 5/20/2006 7:45:09 PM

My wife purchased a Claude Dorval print of a horse-drawn cart on a dirt road with standing water on it moving away from the viewer with a line of trees on the left and a little house also on the left and slightly over the hill. She will not tell me how much she paid for the picture, but I do not think it has any great value. If anyone has any information about this print or the artist I would be very greatful. Thank you. - ABMD: 8/2/2004 11:33:58 PM

We also have the "Venetian" gondola print with the signature on the right, Claude Dorval or Dowal with Borin Mfg Co.Chicago on the left. It has been framed well and sealed with paper on the back. There is a seal on the back which states it is a "Colored Etchprint" It has also been stamped "Venetian Street." The print came to my husband as a heirloom passed to his mother from her aunt and uncle. They were given the picture in 1931 by a church congregation. We would like to know more about the artist. Mine is titled "Riviera" on the left, signed by Claude Dorval on the right...several figures getting into a gondola. I paid about $20 for it, which seems to be about what it is worth, though it suits its present setting (a 1930's decor) quite well. . - ron: 3/22/2004 10:00:35 PM

I have pen and ink drawing of Gibson Girl, the artist is McComb dated 1904 any information about the artist would be great I got the drawing in Rual Valley Pa. The glass frame had old King Drug sticker on back. - Rosie: 1/20/2004 12:53:54 AM
I have two portraits (maybe self portraits) of oil on wood dated on back--1848, with the name J. Roeting, also on back. The signature on the front looks like it faded, or, someone tried to clean the frame and rubbed it out, but I can make out the letters enough to know that it could have been Julius Amatus Roeting--born 1822 dresden died 1896 dusseldorf listed as renowned. There's also an auction sticker on back. Passed down from my grandfather. I cant find anyone proficient enough in this region to validate these for me. Can anyone help? - Missfootdoc: 12/29/2003 7:27:57 AM
I just purchased ($15) a print by Claude Dorval (which when looking at his signature appears to be Dowal). I bought it for the frame which appears to be old. His signature is on the bottom right side and Master Art Corporation Chicago on the bottom left. The picture is a street scene with a woman in the bottom right walking away. Next to her is the back end of a covered horse drawn cart. Main part of the picture is a multi-story building appearing to be a residence(s) and next to it a steeple topped building. Also in the pic are two separate groups of people on the sidewalks...and another simple horse drawn cart. - ntveca@aol.com: 11/9/2003 6:44:48 PM
Dave and Shirley. Does you Water mill print by Claude Dorval actucally have the name of the print on the painting? - Paintings: 10/25/2003 12:03:03 PM
Well, I can help a little because I read a tiny bit of French... Claude Dorval was from Paris, and travelled all over Europe (mostly England) painting & sketching ... the prints were indeed manufactured in Chicago around the turn of the century. There's a gallery in Paris named after him, so he must have been an artist of some renown. - Park*Place: 8/18/2003 5:40:17 PM
I have a signature Claude Dorval framed picture of a water scene with a large windmill in the right foreground and several other windmills in the background. There is a little shack on a what appears to be a pier and several schooners in the water. Also a man in a rowboat. The sky looks like a storm is brewing and overall is a very dismal picture. I took it to the Knoxville Antique Show recently and had it appraised. All the appraiser had to say was that it was in the early 1900's, was an etching and that it was a department store picture from that era. He placed a value of $150-$200. Anyone else have this picture. Shirley 6-24-03 - sahenich: 6/24/2003 9:49:39 PM
My parents bouth a print form the Masters Art corporation in Chicago and it was purchased about 1935. It is call the water mill. It also has Claude Dorval signature in the right hand corner. - mkurtz61: 3/29/2003 1:21:56 AM
I recently acquired the same print that Nancy of April 16, 2002 has - its matted and framed and looks to be very old. Also looks like his signature in the bottom right corner and in the left corner right behind the woman reads: Master Art Corporation, Chicago. Any help??????????????????????? - nth: 3/9/2003 9:06:33 PM
I also have the Venice print with the Boren Mfg. It belonged to my father-in-law who probably purchased it in the 1950's. In addition I have a Claude Dorval print of a water scene with a wind mill. - dave: 2/8/2003 2:17:32 PM
I believe I have Bonnie's print, but not the one Nancy is talking about. This one has a policeman? looking over the bridge (blue uniform), tow passengers and two workers in the gondola. The water reflects the houses seen on the side. Mine is signed by Claude Dorval and it does not look like a copy, but his actual signature. Frame is old wooden frame with small nails holding the back together. Copper wiring for the hanger. I can't find anything either and am about ready to give up and take it to goodwill. Please someone, write back and tell me I have a masterpiece!  - Nancee: 11/23/2002 8:21:37 PM
I also have this print, which I acquired in a thrift store in Miami Beach. I have also searched the internet without success. This must be the only work by this artist. If anyone finds more info, please let me know. - Carol: 8/14/2002 4:49:55 PM
I bought a print of something that sounds similar today. I was on line trying to find out about the artist. Mine is signed and also has a title "On the Thames". I'm not sure if it's the same print you're describing. Mine has a gondola just passing some buildings and one woman standing on a dock and a bridge in the distance. She's dressed in attire that would remind me of the 1700's or early 1800's. Can't find anything on the artist. Let me know if you find something.  - Nancy: 4/16/2002 10:13:24 PM
I have this print too. And cant find any info about this artist at all anywhere on the net. I bought my print for $7.00 in a junk shop in Saylorburg PA back in 1970. I bought it for the frame alone, its in a great art deco frame. I personally dont think the artist was ever to Venice in his life. It does have a gondola but, the houses look more german or almost tudor rather than venetian. Here's a funny story, I was watching an old 1950's Superman rerun about 3 a.m. a few years ago and the characters on the TV show were standing in front of the very same print hanging on a wall. I couldnt believe it, obviously the studio prop department acquired a copy too. tonytag - tonytag: 3/6/2002 5:39:11 PM
Bonnie, I also have the same exact print which I acquired around 1969.I've been searching for information and have as of yet come up with nothing. Please let me know if you do. Thanks  - Saandra: 2/2/2002 10:00:57 AM
