Hamblen Portrait Soars At Skinner Americana

BOSTON, MASS. — A pristine portrait by Sturtevant J. Hamblen of a child seated in a rocking chair brought $252,000 at Skinner’s Americana sale October 27.

In the portrait, the child wears a blue dress, coral beads and holds her dog with a pink ribbon. The picture came from an Oregon house, with auctioneer Steve Fletcher’s card, and had never been cleaned or overpainted. The successful bidder was Jack O’Brien, co-author of Harbor & Home: Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts, 1710–1850, and now senior specialist at Leigh Keno Auctions.

A full report of the sale will appear in a future edition.
