Sophisticated Eider Drake Takes $767,000 At Sotheby’s

NEW YORK CITY — A rare and important eider drake, circa 1900, attained $767,000, including buyer’s premium, late in the second day of Sotheby’s Important Americana auction that ran January 24–25.

The maker of the solid body drake was unknown, but probably from Monhegan Island, Maine. The sophisticated decoy, which had been estimated at $350/500,000, was noteworthy for its flowing lines and stylized abstract paint.

A full report of the sale will appear in a coming issue.
