Philip C. Shute, 80, Auctioneer

NEW YORK CITY — Philip C. Shute, 80, of Brockton, Mass., died Tuesday, December 3, at the Beth Israel Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Corinne L. (Duffy) Shute for more than 50 years. Until 2001 when he retired, he was owner of Shute Auction Gallery in Brockton.

His love of history and interest in antiques eventually led him to leave teaching and start his own business, Shute Auction Gallery, originally opened in Norwell and later in Brockton.

He was active in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, serving as president for several years and enjoyed “calling” auctions to raise money for his favorite charity.

He was the beloved father of Richard Shute and partner Lorna Avilla of Brockton, Carolyn Shute and husband James Corcoran of Dedham and Susan (Shute) Crowe of Brockton. He was the loving “papa” to Austin, Spencer and Jared Shute and Rachel and Shane Crowe; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Stanley and Donald Shute and Nancy Wellman.

Following cremation, a memorial service was conducted at the Russell & Pica Funeral Home in Brockton. Memorial donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 220 North Main Street Suite 104, Natick MA 01760. For guestbook, visit
